‘A duet for the Oxford & Cambridge Club’
One of the most remarkable pieces in the Caius choir programme is the duet ‘O dive custos’ by Henry Purcell. It is a lament written on the death of the popular Queen Mary in 1695, and its text gives an unusual reference to both Oxford and Cambridge, using its rivers as the source of inspiration. It tells of the Oxonian chorus lying prostrate by the Isis stream, and those washed by the waters of the distant river Cam. ‘Distant’, since the author was a student at New College in Oxford. Purcell captures the mourning of the nation with a bold composition full of deep expression, as you can hear in this short excerpt sung by Pollyanna Furness and Billie Robson.
